Social studies as a subject is a multidisciplinary subject which is the combination of history, art, culture, religion, diversity, geography and almost all the other dimensions of human life and society. It helps gather the vast information of the society going from the stone age to the modern age of science and technology. In one sentence social studies is the subject of the all the subjects.
Students perception towards social studies always varies from one to another. Well! one group of students assume that social studies as a subject is interesting and as an extra advantage of them having good knowledge in Nepali writing they take it as an interesting and marks achieving subject.
On the other hand, there is this another group of students who assume that social studies as a subject is interesting and they know that its really useful in life but fail to achieve good score in exams and struggle a lot while doing their home works too. But why? the reason behind this is the language barrier. In order to achieve good marks in exams putting your thoughts nicely and together is really essential and language acts as a bridge for fulfilling that gap and is considered vital.
Similarly, there is this third group of students who assume that social study is a boring and non interesting subject. This perception towards the subject has developed in students lately due to few reasons. But as we have problems, we have the solutions also.
The lack of interest in teaching learning process can overcome by making the class more interactive and playful in different age groups of students. We can always use the ICT and its other interesting ways of learning and teaching. The PBL (Project Based Learning) approach can always spark the curiosity and will make the subject very interesting. We can always use alternative platforms like debate and podcast creating a very engaging platforms for students to discuss the difficult topics inside the subject matter.
The bottom line is that, the perception towards the subject can matter due to various reason but overall, it’s an interesting and very useful subject in day to day life. Human being is a social animal and we are always engaged in the process of socialization so we teachers and students should combinedly work together towards the betterment of the society by engaging more in the in dept study of human kind and human society. We have always a lot to learn from our history and that knowledge can be used to make our future prosperous and worthy. Even after having multiple challenges in the teaching learning process social study as a subject will always remain interesting and useful in every individual’s life.
